My placement saga-1, @DirectI

I have finally decided to document my Placement journey. May be for the use of aspirants but atleast for my record 😉 I will also try to list out the questions asked and the type of apti paper. I will be writing about those companies for which I qualified to the interview round.

The first company in the list is DirectI. Very few in the college knew that such a company existed I knew about the company as it had sponsored GIDS-2008. They were coming to the campus for the first timDirectIe and had uploaded huge information on the site regarding their selection procedure and interviews. Their recruitment site looked really resourceful and they were looking for people with really good coding and technical skills. I still remember their PPT which went on for more than an hour and half and i had to listen to the whole presentation standing and moreover is was terribly sick that day- running nose, fever :(. Their selection process was a bit different- No apti, 🙂 instead an online programming test 🙁 on their coding platform- CodeChef which they were badly promoting ;), then 2 rounds at the campus and some 9-10 rounds in their Mumbai Head office :P. Luckily they had to postpone the Coding test because by the time they completed their presentation it was 7PM and the Computer Center would be open only till 8PM. So they decided to come some other time for the coding test. I was happy that atleast i got sometime to recover and get well before the test.

One fine day they informed us that the test will be in the afternoon. I was aiming to clear the coding round and wasnt concerned about the interviews. The coding test was not tat difficult either. We were given 2 questions to solve and some 20 of them did one of the two, I was one among them 🙂 and no one was able to crack both the problems. 🙁 I was one among the some 11 or 12 ppl shortlisted for interviews 🙂 . And the fun part was that few had telephonic interviews and some 2 or 3 had face2face. I had a telephonic interview a long one- for around 2 hours 🙁 and it was not good 🙂 They asked me few algorithm based questions though i answered them but the solutions were not efficient :P. Then they asked me few technology based questions and as i had not prepared for the interview i couldn’t answer them effectively. After everyone was done with their interviews we were told that selected few would have a HR round and then few those who clear HR will be flown to Mumbai for their final interviews. For me the result was obvious- Not cleared the Tech interview 😀 One of my friend cleared the tech interview but in the next round they asked him questions regarding his projects and technologies used in the projects which he wasn’t able to answer effectively. Finally only 2 ppl from comps were selected for the grueling rounds at Mumbai. And the result was- No one was selected from NITK 😀 😀

The questions they asked me were-

1. Write a function which takes 2 arrays- One array is the source array and the other array is the array of indices and delete all those elements present at the indices of the source array taking the indices from the second array.

2. There’s a huge data of stock prices for a given duration. Find out on which day the person if he sold his shares would get the maximum loss.

3. Then there was a question on finding the non repeating number in a array of repeating numbers.

4. HTTP is stateless protocol- How does it manage the state- Explain the cookie mechanism

5. Difference between Unique and Primary key

6. Different indexes in database

The company works on cutting edge technologies like RoR, Python, PHP, Java, Web Services, REST and so on. Its a great place for ppl who like to try out new technologies. They have a real good work place with a saloon, gym, cafeteria among others. And they were offering 6-12 lacs of base salary with added benefits 🙂 🙂

  1. Hi,
I have telephonic interview recently with DirectI. Can any one tell me what questions i should expect. Will they ask to solve the actual puzzles of directI (code chef ) during telephonic interview. Or will it be similar to google/microsoft/aamazon interviews.

    Reply
    • They dont ask from the Codechef. They test algo skiils- How efficiently u can solve the given problem. Its more or less similar to MS and Amazon. Actually all of them test for same requirements 🙂 Dont ever give Brute Force method answer- Try to give as much optimised solution possible.

All the best for the interview!!

    • Sudhir,

That’s really good. All the best for your onsite Interview. Its going to consists of many rounds. Though I couldn’t make it to their onsite interview, 2 from my college had been to Mumbai for their Onsite interview. They found it to be challenging. Could u please share the questions asked for you during your telephonic interview so that others reading this will benefit.

    • Depends on the Company who is interviewing u. But u will have a good exposure- provided u are not just attending the workshops.

    • I dont have much to say. I think I hav covered everything in my blog 🙂 They mostly look at how efficiently u can write programs for the questions they provide. They look for efficiency to the order of nlogn or n. Dont even try to give brute force solutions. It will let down ur impression.
For apti try solving their questions on codechef.com All the best for your Apti and interviews.

  4. Hey,

Few days back , I got call from HR for system admin profile. Got scared after visiting their interviewing process. I am wondering whether should I go ahead to talk further for technical rounds.
    Why I am scared:-

Below are List of scary Common Interview TOPICS for me.

    DNS, IP Routing
UNIX Fundamentals – processes, load, cpu times, memory concepts, fork, thread etc
    PERL/C/Ruby/Python/PHP
    nginx,lighty,squid,perlbal,varnish,
    Apache/IIS/Tomcat/Resin
    Load Balancing
Storage devices, RAID Levels, RAID Stripe, NAS, SAN etc
Filesystems – ext4, XFS, ZFS, NTFS, LVM
    DRBD, Data Replication concepts
    Nagios, Cacti, RRDTool, MRTG,
    Postfix/qmail/Exim/Sendmail/Zimbra
RDBMS, MySQL, Postgres, MSSQL, BDB, Database Replication Concepts

Can anybody shed some light on it for system admin interview question at Directi?

  5. DIrecti is visiting our campus on 8th August 2011.

The written test will be conducted online (codechef.com) or offline (on paper).

i have my interview A DAy after for Directi .. i am very worried . .. what kind of questions i can expect form them , i am not that much good at writing algo i efficient way as i more in web development domain..

    • The questions they asked for me were more towards writing algorithms. And later they moved to questions concerning to my interest areas.
So try to prepare a bit on the algorithms side as well. Because those judge your problem solving skills.

  7. I feel it a little unfair when some company asks so many questions to a fresher. One person in college cannot be knowing everything and working with a great company like Directi will give him great exposure. I agree they want the best but they loose out on innovative and fresh minds. Why not give chance to the average and test them accordingly.

    • Every company have their own recruitment process and requirements. So we might have to adjust to those. Agree that being a fresher its often difficult to know a lot of things. But the questions DirectI asked were more of algorithmic which I think a fresher should be able to solve.

  10. Hi everyone. I had also been shortlisted for the position of Quality Assurance Associate (Mobile Testing).
I faced 3 rounds – an online test consisting of basic quant and some very tough english comprehension questions.
After clearing that, I had to prepare 2 presentations on test drives of 2 apps – 1 being deeloped by Directi and in its beta stage and any other smartphone app of my choice.
After clearing these 2 rounds, I was called for a face-2face interview and interviewed by the GM of Directi.
It lasted for around 1 hour and was quite relaxed, with him asking me questions to see how I would approach the problems of ensuring quality in sectors totally unrelated to software. Some basic maths problems were also assigned to me to see how I would solve them.
After the interview was over, the guy informed me that I would be informed of their decision within a week.
    I really hope I get through! 🙂

Directi is visiting our campus tomorrow .

Could you please help about what type of questions it asks in online test.

  12. Hey, Thanks for the post! Quite helpful. Could you please clarify, how oracle server technology is different from oracle apps. As both are coming to my coll, NITK. And what’s the salary difference? Do the server technology ask same type of question as the former does?

    Reply
    • Hi, I am an alumni from NITK and currently working in Server Technology. Server Technologies(ST) covers products like Database, Fusion Middleware, Enterprise Manager, Development Tools, ADF Framework and so on. Oracle Apps covers developing fusion applications which make use of the components/technologies developed by ST group. Usually ST pays higher than Oracle Apps.
As far as the interview is concerned- Oracle Apps covers lot of SQL and Algorithm based questions, but ST interview is more towards your interests, OS concepts, algorithms to some extent. Usually ST keep a higher CGPA cut off.
Please contact me at sanaulla123 [at] gmail [dot] com if you need any help.
