Book Review: Digital Minimalism

Digital Minimalism is about how to de-addict yourself from social media and other digital services that hijack your precious time.

In the first of the book Digital Minimalism the author Cal Newport talks about:

  • How the social media and these devices in your hands and pockets are ruining your life and your family time.
  • How these companies are investing and researching a lot to make us glued to their services
  • His strategy called “Digital Declutter” for protecting our time and fighting against these armies of distraction. Remember it is not an easy fight.

In the second part of the book Digital Minimalism the author talks about some of the practices you can follow to distance yourself from the digital life and reclaiming your physical life. So of these which the author goes into detail are:

  • Spending time along
  • Prevention of reacting to any social media posts
  • Using the time to develop hobbies to improve your leisure life

For each of the above practices the author goes into detail giving a lot of techniques to implement them and lots of real life examples as well.

Digital Minimalism is full of case studies and living examples of how people benefited themselves by applying the Digital Declutter technique developed by the author.

I would highly recommend this book and even more than the author’s other book Deep Work which I have reviewed here. If you can implement some of the techniques and practices suggested by the author it will have a great effect on your life and all of a sudden you will have more time to do important things, more time to spend on your self and more time to spend with your family. This is our resistance against the companies cashing on people’s attention and time. We need to reclaim our time and our life.
